phpbb3 works very well with firebird 2.0 or 2.1
and is recomended to use firebird >2.0
i knew there were some limitation in 1.5.x so it didn't quite worked with it

maybe the best way if you can is to upgrade to 2.0 or if is not
possible to change the db

then to put in an virtual machine firebird 2.1 and phpbb3 to connect to it
