I just select the option to install a copy of fbclient.dll as gds32.dll when
running the install package. The PHP driver is still looking for that and the
one supplied with PHP is now somewhat dated ( and needs replacing ).

This is the problem with Linux. People force their own ideas on you when they
create the RPM for their own distribution.
I've been using Mandriva for some time now, and that has all of the right
things set up for both Firebird and PHP.
We need someone who knows Ubuntu to provide a 'fix' to get the right packages
together :(
