I'll leave fb-s to answer the SP questions. As for PHP, simply take a
look at some of the existing applications. In my case Tikipro provides
all of the facilities I need, and builds the queries 'on the fly'
depending on 'sort_mode', 'filter' and 'page' controls.

www.tikipro.org will show you the sort of thing, and there are links to
the code so you can have a look at how it's done. ADOdb provides some of
the facilities as part of it's abstraction layer, and careful
standardisation of things provides the rest.
