There is the reverse situation on PHP. PHP6 was intended to be a major upgrade
with full Unicode support, but the amount of work did not have enough bodies to
actually do it. In the meantime the 'minor' versions of PHP5 from 5.2 have
introduced incompatibilities so that unless you have upgraded at every version
bringing code forward is a major exercise. Introducing a nice major version
break earlier whould have helped.

I've only had a few little problems with moving on from FB1.5 in terms of SQL
braking so Firebird is a different situation, but for many of my customers
nothing much has changed since the 90's in what they need to do so that the only
reason we have to 'upgrade' is when some security problem is identified. Will
FB3 bring anything my customers need ... probably not ... but the threat that
something will stop working is what puts them off allowing me to upgrade at all!
Some are still on FB1.5 even though I know I can move to 2.1 ( 2.5 does
introduce a problem in one of my legacy windows applications which I'm not able
to recompile these days :( )
