Subject Support for Tablespaces/Data-placement in Firebird?
Author plinehan
Hi all,

Not sure if this should be in this list or maybe Architect,
please let me know if I've committed a faux pas!

I seem to remember reading (if anyone could provide a link,
that would be great!) that there was code in the Interbase 6.0
release that could, if activated/revived/resurrected allow for
the placement of data files - i.e. à l'Oracle - tablespaces
which would allow FB DBA's to put data on particular disks.

My understanding of the situation at the moment is that the
only placement strategy one can pursue is putting the OS on
one disk, the server on another, the temp directory on another
and the database file itself on yet another.

This has the major disadvantage of, for example, not allowing
the DBA to put infrequently updated tables on one of the
3 other disks to really optimise disk usage for "hot"
tables. Plus, with the server taking up a whole 20MB - with
docco &c., this is wasteful to say the least - I'd say it's
probably impossible to even buy 20GB disks now.

I know that one of FB's selling points is ease of administration,
but maybe an entry in firebird.conf could do the trick for
those adventurous enough to do this - the default - i.e. the
variable DataPlacement not set or set to 0, F, False or NO
would do nothing - i.e. current behaviour, whereas the more
technically minded users and installers of FB would have the
extra control that such a feature could bring.

I'd be interested in hearing views on this strategy and also
if what I said about there being some code (somewhere...)
that has been written that actually could do this is true.
