In the LinuxQuestions.org poll "Database of the year 2003", Firebird came in a *very* close second to MySQL. The results are cited here:

You can also mention the fact that last year, Firebird was nominated for 4 (out of 10) SourceForge Community Awards and won two of them: "Best Project for the Enterprise" (!) and "Best User Support".
