True. But current FB1.5.x codebase cannot compete with the postgre,
mysql4.2.x or mysql5.x packages for ordinary db users. Posgre feature
list has always been excellent. Mysql since v4.2x and 5.x versions
have finally started to look like a real db server. (...waiting for to
be flamed now...)
***But then most important thing, they have a good and attractive
website to browse and download software to get started.***
Postgre and Mysql has good web and native-based administrator tools or
query tools available. Download MysqlAdministrator or
MysqlQueryBrowser from mysql site along with the setup. Not to mention
phpMysql or phpPosgre web applications.
Firebird tend to have too much hidden secrets, I mean its hard to find
good admin tools or documentation sites.
To be honest, we cannot compare to www.mysql.org site as its a big
company's site with all that money to spend.
But we can always take http://www.postgresql.org/ site and see how
well thought site it is. Click the download page and you immediately
find nice link list to all you need. pgAdmin, phpPgAdmin, drivers,
pl-j java UDF library. Then documentation has up-to-date information.
I have always found firebird websites hard to find, many has outdated
documentation or lack of it. http://www.firebirdsql.org has been a
good upgrade what it was few years back.
But lack of supporting tools might scare ordinary users away. Download
page does not give any such tools to download. What happens when FB2.x
comes out. Do we have to rely on commandline tool only or do FB1.5.x
admin tools still work.
We can survive with it if have used Interbase and FB for many years.
But newcomers probably go for Mysql or Postgresql installations.
