Triggers were part of V1.x, very early. Jim fought stored
procedures for years, having understood them as just an answer to the
question "Why don't you have stored procedures like Sybase?" Sybase has
architectural constraints that meant they were very slow over the wire,
so stored procedures were an essential performance boost. The idea of a
stored procedure as an encapsulation of a common function didn't occur
to him, even though people were using triggers on views to achieve that
effect. So stored procedures were a version 4 (post Jim) addition.
