it seems that Firebird (under different names then :-) implemented
many features before or at the same time as Oracle. E.g.
"Oracle version 6, released in July 1988,...One of the most important of its new features
was row-level locking-a transaction performing writes locks only the affected rows (not an entire table) ..."
FB never needed locking whole tables.
"Oracle version 6 also introduced hot backups, allowing a database to be backed up while in use."
FB had hot backups from the beginning.
