Lester, you are a PHP man. Consider this. The LAMP stack is a
phenomenal success, largely driven by PHP. I would estimate that 15%
of the world's database installations are back-ends to PHP
applications. Yet Firebird is using an antiquated Interbase PHP
driver and Firebird is rarely supported "out-of-the-box" by major PHP
application frameworks (e.g. PHProjekt). It is clear that the PHP
community does not know that Firebird is "simply the best". This is
our fault, not theirs.
What are PHP developers looking for? What arguments would make them
switch? If I am informed correctly, PHP5 no longer compiles in MySQL
support by default -- there is an opportunity out there.
Have you noticed how PHP apps have to distribute MySQL scripts to
create the database? That you cannot "xcopy" install a MySQL
database, even though the rest of the app can be xcopy installed?
Wouldn't you think that PHP developers would like xcopy install
sequences?
Low end sites will probably use SQLLite, but what will larger, mid-
market installations use? Which arguments would you use to make the
case for Firebird? How do you communicate that in 5 seconds?
