I've been using InstantObjects (basically an OPF, see
www.instantobjects.org) quite a lot lately, and it works well against
Firebird even with IBX as middleware. Actually, the middleware and the
back-end are not all that important when you use an OPF.

I've been using IBO quite satisfactorily for apps with a more
traditional approach to data access.
