Whilst I don't think they will ever open source Oracle, I can see them giving
it away 'for free' in the not so distance future. The current list price of
Oracle Standard for 2 CPU's/Unlimited users is less than both MS-SQL and
Interbase, and if you give Oracle a telephone call, they will knock 40-50%
off the list price without much hesitation. The majority of our (albeit
large) customers don't pay for Oracle licences at all, but they do have
ongoing support contracts and 'value add' products.
The support/maintenace/value add areas is where I see Oracle moving to,
rather than per user/CPU licences, as that is where the money is.
