One nice thing about FreeBSD is that the ports system
gives you access to a lot of preconfigured software. Both
FreeBSD and Gentoo Linux take the approach of 'build from
source' for the ports and this has become a cultural thing
for both distributions.

So, occasionally you will see prepackaged, pre compiled
software but its usually commercial. Most open source
stuff under these distro's is built from sources for
cultural reasons.
