You can store "hierarchical data" in a relational database just fine.

This has nothing to do with the "relational model".

What IBM seems to be doing - and others as well - is creating a "native XML
type" and allowing certain operations on it. "document based storage"...
well, that's great and all, but I wonder what the basis for that is.
