I know the internals a bit, and think it would be hard to predict the
amount of time required to backup a database. Yes, you could figure out
how many pages are in the database, but there's no way for gbak to know
how many pages have been read. Even the gross size of the database
isn't a good indicator because gbak doesn't read indexes. Similarly for
restore, the size of the backup isn't much of an indicator because the
backup file doesn't include indexes and building indexes takes time...
lots of time.
