I found ADODB last night.
How well does it handle blob(s)
of subtype text?

I'll let someone else better qualified to give you reasons why you
should use FB, but in the mean time let me recommend ADODB
(http://php.weblogs.com/ADODB) for db abstraction for FB or
postgressql. It made my move from ASP/ADO/SQL Server to PHP/FB very
smooth.
