Carl,
I too have multiple versions of that dll. I think what really happens is the
Microsoft does not stick to its specifications and so vendors would rather
have the dll local to their applications so they don't depend on the system
dll (in C:\winnt\system32). Rightly so !
So the application I have that use MSVCRT.DLL like the java sdk, etc, use
the local version (due to the way the OS will search for a dll) rather than
the system version.
This is what I am suggesting for the Interbase install. Install it in the
local folder. That way, we can have other applications running...
On one of my servers, I had PC Anywhere and SQL server installed and working
fine before I attempted to install Interbase. Both stopped working since. So
I had to format and reinstall the OS and other software without Interbase.
On another machine I had installed Interbase before installing PC Anywhere
or SQL server in the hope that they would overwrite the dll when they
install.
But it didn't work like that. Neither PC Anywhere nor MS SQL server could
get rid of that dll. They both complained about the fact that the dll was
read-only and that I will have to reboot etc. So I did, but they bombed out
on re-boot saying they couldn't find the entry point.
So I'm stuck. I've reformatted and installed the OS but am waiting for a
solution before I go ahead and install anything else. I've been wanting to
promote IB to my company, but I can't do so until these issues are sorted
out. I don't want them to think this product is not up to the mark.
I'm in desperate need to a solution either via a new installation or a
manual process.
Please help.
6.1.8637.0 seems to be the latest version of this file available and works
for all products including IB. Don't ask me how a figured that out ! It's a
long story.
I have 5 instances of this file on my system
1. Omni httpd - 6.0.8397.0
2. Interbase - 5.0.0.7303
3. Adobe ImageStyler - 4.20.0.6201
4. Java SDK - 6.0.8337.0
5. System32 folder - 5.0.0.7303

Shiv,
Well you've got me on both counts/apps. When I first set up this Win2K
machine I tried to install pcAnywhere and could not (I don't remember what
version I have but it works fine on Win95/98/NT). I have not bothered to
update it but I will when I *really* need it on this machine.
I do not have MS SQL Server here either; that's on my NT box.
I did notice a *third* copy of MSVCRT.dll in my \JBuilder35\jdk1.2.2\jre\bin
directory which has a date/time stamp of 6/7/2000 9:36 (version 6.0.8337.0).
The other two are a bit older according to the date/time stamp but are
version (6.1.8637.0) (in \WinNT\System32 and \WinNT\System32\DLLCache).
What version are you seeing?
I suspect you have saved me a few hours of heartache or a few gray hairs
just by calling attention to the file. (I really hate to find I've got
multiple copies/versions of a dll of the same name. It usually means I've
been sloppy/careless somewhere. What was the point of a dll again?)
