It is right that you don't need (and shouldn't have) a(n) (x)inetd
entry when you are using Superserver.

Could you please supply the output of
ldd -r -v /opt/interbase/bin/ibserver
ldd -r -v /opt/interbase/lib/gds.so
or gds.so.1
don't know what its name on your machine.

Could you try to start the server with
/opt/interbase/bin/ibserver&

and see what happens?
