3 PHD POSITIONS on Experimental Software Engineering, Software
Metrics in Agile and Open Source Development, and Distance Learning
in Software Engineering
----------------------------------------------------------------------
--
The Center for Applied Software Engineering (CASE) at Free University
of Bozen-Bolzano is looking for PhD students for projects in the area
of Experimental Software Engineering, Software Metrics in Agile and
Open Source Development, and Distance Learning in Software
Engineering. The granted students will receive 43,936.00 euro for the
three years.
Granted students will not pay any tuition. PhD students will have a
preferred access to facilities and accommodations for the first year.
The fellowships start on January 2008.

1 PHD STUDENT IN THE FIELD OF EXPERIMENTAL SOFTWARE ENGINEERING:
Empirical Software Engineering creates and verify models of software
development via experiments. As with medicine in software development
the technologies are human based and differ by a large number of
variables. The goal of the Empirical Software Engineering is to
understand and study their effects in the real operational profile of
software systems. Currently, there is a lack of models that allow us
to reason about the discipline, there is a lack of recognition of the
limits of technologies for certain contexts, there is a lack of
analysis and experimentation.
1 PHD STUDENT IN THE FIELD OF SOFTWARE METRICS IN AGILE AND OPEN
SOURCE
DEVELOPMENT:
Agile and open source software development are new emerging methods
of software development. Understanding the principles, the practices,
and the applications of these methods is of paramount importance for
the management of software projects. Software metrics is a discipline
that aims at controlling, verifying, and measuring software processes
and systems. Thus measuring agile or open source development
processes enables managers to identify good practices of development
and researchers to build mathematical models of agile and open source
software processes.
1 PHD STUDENT IN DISTANCE LEARNING IN SOFTWARE ENGINEERING:
There are many challenges in delivering a software engineering
curriculum by distance learning. This program is characterized as
part-time, open, large-scale distance learning, professionally
accredited, and primarily aimed at practitioners in the IT industry.
The research discusses the implications of each of these
characteristics for the curriculum and its delivery. It creates and
investigates the newest technologies supporting distance learning in
this context and outlines the program's and technology's future
directions.
Interested candidates please send by email informal enquiries, CV
(including publication list) and links to selected papers to the two
reference professors:
- Prof. Gabriella Dodero (Gabriella.Dodero@...) and Prof. Marco
Scotto (Marco.Scotto@...)for Distance learning in Software
Engineering
- Prof. Barbara Russo (Barbara.Russo@...) and Prof. Alberto
Sillitti (Alberto.Sillitti@...) for Software Metrics in Agile
and Open Source Development
- Prof. Giancarlo Succi (Giancarlo.Succi@...) and Prof. Raimund
Moser (Raimund.Moser@...) for Empirical Software Engineering
The deadline for the formal application is September 28, 2007.
