I want to learn, how collations work in Firebird.
If there is no article available, also an advice on
where to start looking into the source code would be
welcome.

To give a concrete point, I don't understand why
collations depend on the character encoding. In my
understanding collations can be definined on (subsets of)
UNICODE codepoints and are naturally transported to any
character encoding.

To make this more ON TOPIC, I would suggest following
this approach in future versions.
