Your guess about 'zlib' was correct. It's *the* authority among x-platform
compression libraries, and it also contains some code for gzip. It's not a
utility, it's a "lib" written in C and with connections to just about any
language and platform available. Without this massive X-platform
connectivity I'd never suggested to use it for gbak.
