Until recently I set cookies off but it didn't affect my ability to use
egroups. It's the first I've heard of this - do you have a reference or
something I could read?

The easiest way to join an egroup is just to send an "empty" email to
listname-subscribe@egroups.com

It just happens automatically. But you will need to go to the site once
you are subscribed if you want to set options like "text-only messages", etc.
