Thank you Jason.  I'm still scratching the surface of the power of IBObjects.  I did actually encounter this problem again since my original post.  This time I tried using a calculated field - keeping the second out of the IB_Query SQL and this was fine.  Wary of a possible performance hit with this technique though(?)
