Alan,

I doubt if you can abort a running garbage collection, short of reboot.

However, we set it to to a large number so that it will not happen in a
days worth of transactions. And then at night, we run a manual one
using the services manager. The reason we dont disable it is that if
the nightly one does not run then we would rather the automatic one runs
than not running one at all. If garbage collection never ran, things
would grind to a halt.
