It would be nicer if you could use blob filters in SQL, for example:

select cast(myblobcolumn as subtype -2)

and then the blobfilter from subtype <as stored in the column> to
subtype -2 would be used.

Or store it as -2 (zipped) and always retrieve it as "normal".

But no, no such thing, hence, blob filters are much harder to use
than they should be.
