Many thanks Helen & Joe.

I installed madExcept. What a lifesaver. I now know what the problem
is. The error message says "Firebird/Interbase Client DLL is not
installed".

I'm not sure what I have done wrong as I believe that i have followed
all the instructions. I'd be really grateful for suggestions to fix this.
