We had a 'Wang' in the Chem Dept that only the lecturers could touch
(which looked very rare by the dust build-up). Did Chem honours in
1974 and one of the projects was to go to the 'The Building of the
Gods', and use a program already installed on a mainframe by
punching some cards for input. Having never seen a computer (other
than on TV) before it was quite an experience. Took the longest time
of the projects in the course but hey I loved it.
The computer students were looked upon with awe by the other
students.

From my limited knowledge I agree with you. Just trying to 'learn
the ropes' first but will certainly heed your advice in the
months/years to come.
