W2k SP4 introduced problems with Events - which I understand was fixed.
W2k needs a local loopback adapter if you do not have a network
connection fitted, in order to get TCP/IP
XP changed the network layer once again and will apparently provide
TCP/IP even without a network connection, but in all cases loss of a
network cable can result in TCP/IP being switched off.

Bottom line - I don't think all combinations of windows versions,
service packs and configurations have actually been tested, and MS does
seem to like to change things at each 'fix' in the interests of
security, so it's possible that current windows updates may also break
XP in the same way that they broke W2k :)
