drop a panel onto the grid
drop your control onto the panel
set the panel visible to false
then when you enter/exit the column, set the topleft and width of the panel
to match the grid column width and cell position and set it visible. then
when you exit you set the panel visible to false....

it used to work for me in Delphi 1 - should still work now
