But I don't want to prevent inserts under normal circumstances. What am I
doing wrong.

My form has a grid and the incremental search control. If the cursor is in
the grid then editing must be permissible. The idea is if the user wants to
quickly find a record they put the cursor in the search field. So do I have
to 'PreventInserts' when they enter the field and do the reverse when they
exit ?

This has nothing to do with incremental searching. Set PreventInserts to
true and that should clear it up.
