George,
the first place I would want to look is the version number of your
gds32.dll client (in the system directory of the remote client) to make
sure it is the right one for the server you are running. You will actually
need to perform a client-only install on your Windows client using the
correct version of the client library. That *does* mean downloading the
Windows install of the same Firebird version that you installed on your
Linux server.
