IB_ (the only one I use):
set a true TIB_Query.GetServerDefaults, that's all!
Recent version have improved a lot, so server defaults (of the entire database) are loaded on the client file only once (when required the first time) and cached in memory. They work not only for grids, the default values are put in the dataset buffer when Insert is issued, so it's available for whatever you want.
