John,
Yes, it has always been this way I just have been lax about enforcing it.
The productivity bundle is good for a full year as are all initial purchase
prices.
The rule of thumb is initial purchase covers 1 year for minor updates only
and all upgrades cover 6 months.
If there is a major update to IBO then original purchases within 6 months
get a free update.
This is based on the idea that I will always support two versions of IBO and
come out with major versions once or twice a year.
I am considering charging additional licensing if you are using multiple
versions of Delphi/BCB/Kylix. It is a heck of a lot of work to support all
these versions and there should be some additional compensatory revenue for
that. When I come out with the Kylix version I will have it all figured out.
So, take this as a head's up.
Probably some things I can learn from Microsoft. I think IBO's greatest
obstacle is whether it brings in enough money or not. So far trustware is
proving to do well even though I have only partially implemented it. Once
the whole trustware model is in place I think IBO will do much better. I
also think there are some things Microsoft could learn from me too. FWIW.
I'm trying to get a mailing to all existing customers explaining this in
better detail so that the confusion surrounding IBO upgrade policy can be
stamped out.
