There *was* a time when GPL wasn't considered *serious*, but I seem to
recognize a more and more acceptance of its spirit nowadays.

The arguments against it, see the recent debate after M$ statements on
Free/Open Software, are very weak once you get at them.

While for a library it may introduce some unwanted peculiarities (even
the FSF recognized it, and they published the "Lesser GPL"), I think
it would fit very well for a standalone application.
