This thread is getting well OT for IBO but I am prompted to comment briefly on this.
I note that this comment was "tongue in cheek" of course...but to me the great benefit of the open source database is exactly that it opens the potential for developers to do such things. Not to hurt Borland (which, despite the noise in the bpi newsgroups, is not the intention of anyone) but to open up new ways to use the database.

It's happening in abundance already - PHP, DBI, ODBC, Ole-DB, to name just a few.

Of course OS developers work for pleasure - they certainly don't do it for the money. The need for money in open source development isn't a profit objective. Firebird isn't a company with shareholders to please. But cash for code makes it possible for a key developer to devote more hours to crucial pieces.
