After you decide which version of Firebird to use - and I suggest
either the most recent 2.1 or 2.5 - backup the database using
the InterBase server and gbak, then install Firebird and restore
the database. All open source.

If you're still running Dialect 1, this would be a good time to
change to Dialect 3. That's a slightly larger issue and you should
read this:

You can perform the whole conversion with the tools on the Firebird
kit.
