IB 6.5 is a commercial distribution based on the IB 6.0.1 code - it is IB
6.0.1 with some bug fixes and a small collection of extra features (you can
read about those at the Borland site). It is commercial - you have to buy
the software and also server and user licences. It has versions for
Windows, Linux and Solaris. It is not open source but you can download
free trials. Borland currently has IB 7 in beta, also not open source.
Firebird 1 is the active open source distribution based on the same IB
6.0.1 C codebase. It has more than 1000 identifiable bug fixes (see the
bug tracker at http://sourceforge.net/projects/firebird ), plus thousands
more code fixes to make the code more stable; and a number of new
pieces. Read the release notes for details. It has versions for Windows,
Linux, 2 Solaris platforms, FreeBSD, HP-UX and others. The software is
free and there are no licensing fees - "free to use and free to deploy".
Currently in development is Firebird 1.5, functionally similar to Firebird
1, with more new features. For 1.5 the entire codebase has been
reconstructed in C++ with some important architectural enhancements. It
will be upwardly compatible with InterBase and previous Firebird databases
and prepare the way for Firebird 2.
drivers; but not client applications. The reason is that there is a
highly active community already producing a huge number of manager
programs, all of which are superior to IBConsole and are under active
development. Some are free, many are commercial and you are spoiled for
choice.
To see the offerings, go to the Contributed page at http://www.ibphoenix.com
If you like IB Console, try out Lorenzo Mengoni's derived open source
IBOConsole at http://www.mengoni.it/downloads.html. Another good, free
tool with a lot of utilities is IB_SQL which you can get from
http://www.ibobjects.com
If you plan to develop with Firebird or InterBase, there is an active
support list at http://www.yahoogroups.com/community/ib-support
The ib-conversions list is specifically about converting other RDBMS
databases to Firebird or IB. We don't do database support here.
