I have to agree with you, Helen...
Though I have done some cursory research on the possibility of transferring such data to a new forum platform, this is not an endeavor without its complexities and difficulties. And it will be a time consuming effort.
The only consideration I see for even considering such an endeavor at all, is that Yahoo has been a dying platform for many years, though its death appears to be much slower than that of AOL, which are both owned by Verizon.
As a Verizon FIOS user for many years in New York, I have seen absolutely no marketing of the platform in any way. And from a cursory glance at the history of the acquisition by Verizon, it did not appear that this was a much sought after company.
Since 2013, the company has experienced data breach issues, which is becoming quite common for all large portals simply because they all have become to large, which means a severe increase in vulnerabilities to attack, no matter what the security specialists employed by these companies come up with..
Unfortunately, military science axioms are as much a part of business institutions as they are of the battlefield. And in this case, such large entities are ripe for attack and can easily be besieged for which no defender in history has survived with the exception of one. And in that case, like a modern baseball game, it was simply rained out so the besiegers packed up their bags and left the defenders on their own.
Just saying...
