if I do nbackup ..... it fails, telling me I cannot access the security2.fdb (as a normal user)

I would have expected the file to have group rw enabled so that permitted users can be a member of group firebird to do this

Definitely. You wouldn't like any third party to access the password /
security database directly, would you?
On the other hand, in what way does it stop you from using nbackup? I
suppose what you actually need to do is to backup / restore a normal
database, not the system-wide security db.
