I changed the service to gds_db. not sure if that will help.

Also, here is more complete information on telnet:

[turbolinux@localhost firebird]$ telnet localhost 3050
Trying ::1...
telnet: connect to address ::1: Connection refused
Trying 127.0.0.1...
telnet: connect to address 127.0.0.1: Connection refused
