The format version number is a single byte, so it's possible to exhaust the format version numbers by altering a table repeatedly (that's a hedge because I don't remember if the byte is treated as signed). A gbak backup/restore resets the format version numbers. (Again, a hedge because it may be necessary for gbak to alter tables when there are cross references, so the restore may not create exclusively format version 1 records).
