I once did a BDE to IBO conversion presentation at a conference.
Although it was one of Delphi's BDE-based demonstration application, so
rather a small one, it was a matter of a few minutes to convert the
BDE-based source code over to IBO (I'm not talking about the database
structure, but there are tools out there for that as well). There was
some kind of funny WUAH effect in the audience. ;-)

After the conversion, a good practice is to run SysInternals
ProcessExplorer to check if the application still loads any BDE dll's.

Another conversion project moving away from the BDE, in this particular
case with MSSQL, went fine with AnyDAC. AnyDAC can connect to Firebird
natively as well, but doesn't have that mature stuff like automatic OAT
advancing, DML Caching etc ... as in IBO.
