Up until version 2.5, we were able to run an old version of gbak on a new
database to 'back-pedal' a version if needs be. But this particular
compatibility has been lost in version 2.5. I am finding a few little niggles
with running 2.5 with some older versions of programs, and have had to drop back
to FB2.1.4 on a couple of sites. So while the DATABASE can be upgraded, other
operability may be more of a problem.

I am assuming there is no guarantee, but I didn't know if there was an attempt at backward compatibility. You back up the database using the older database server version of gbak, and
then restore on the new server. Up-issuing versions of the database is a 'given'
and if it WASN'T working then there would be some major complaints ;)
