Norman,
I'm quite sure that gbak -z <database> <backup file name>
has always produced a backup since the glory days of
Groton Database Systems. It was a way of tagging a backup
log with the versions of gbak and the server (and any intermediate
levels). Done deliberately. Don't know why it didn't happen in your
testing.
Cheers,
Ann
