Subject RE: [firebird-support] Multiple Firebird Applications

Hi,

I do not know about anyone else.

My view is that someone else may install in the /windows($Mswindows Home directory at any time)
Or that matter the main /opt/firebird directory on Linux(or wherever a distro my place Linux)

Thus I make sure that the dll's are:
on windows:
i) named in the dynamic script(bat) file that start the application(in versioned directories in my case)
example : START /D\\machine\bin\environment_dlls D\\machine\bin\appversion\app.exe %1 %2 %3 %4 %5 %6 %7

ii) Or just place them in the same directory as the application executable.

iii) Or start them via a short cut that names 'Start in' directory of the application executable as the one holding the environment dll's required.

iv) Mixture of above - We have shortcuts that point to static excutables that fire the batch files as per point i). Allows easy hot change of application during use application.

on linux
in the softlinks(ln -s) in directory with the software

or (not recommended) set LDLIBRARY path in a shell script that starts the applications.

We use 1.5x, 2.1x and 2.5x on machines.

alex

Subject: [firebird-support] Multiple Firebird Applications

We have been using Firebird for a number of years with multiple applications accessing the server/databases with few issues. Currently running FB 2.1.1 on a Linux server, though development is on a Windows server.

We have recently purchased some 3rd party applications that also uses Firebird (but 2.0).

We are starting to see issues (cant connect to database) because some of the clients cannot find the fbclient.dll. The 3rd part programs install it in their exe directory, rather than a firebird client directory or windows/system32.

Is there a recommended way to install/keep updated the fbclient.dll (eg using group policy) and is there a problem if we have a single dll copy on a common server which we either copy to local PCs on login or indeed just leave on the server and then register on login
