What makes you think, that you "may have reached some operational
limitations"? Maybe your problems lie with how you defined your meta
data, your queries or transaction handling. Post some specifics and
someone smart will surely answer you :)

Typically I perform an upgrade like this:
- backup db with old FB version
- uninstall old FB
- install new FB
- restore your backup with new FB version

But going from 2.1.0 to 2.1.3 I suspect that just uninstalling old FB
and installing new FB is enough. Though with the former procedure
you're always on the safe side.
