I will probably create a connection screen with some input fields for
hostname, portnumber and database name (and username / password)

The suggestion to find computers responding to the entered portnumber would
help a lot (with the default of 3050) and will be enough in most situations.
I also found a way to request the registered databases on a server, so that
would make it a lot easier to find the correct server. I can even try to
open the database to see if it is a database for my application.
