Firebird allows for specifying relative database paths. So in that way, there is no way for firebird to distinguish between aliases and database paths.
Although I agree that it would be better if Firebird returned a more userfriendly (or at least Firebird specific) error than just repeating the OS-specific error message (the error isn't even logged).
