I wouldn't think of copying the file. It must be backed up and restored.
That said, moving from 1.0.3 to 2.1.2 is not a simple task. You are missing
quite a few versions and the client is not likely to work without error.

Your attempt to use the backup is a good one, but you don't indicate what
"not working" actually means.
