And the "anality" of it is really frustrating.
My first guess was that someone "high up" has a "friend" who wants to
sell in his database which supports such features. Too much
conspiracy theory, I know, but there will be a lot of resources
expended to very little gain.

So, what do I do?
RedSoft might be an idea - I'll look for info.
I've skimmed through the encryption bits of the documentation of the
latest Interbase version (20 pages). That implementation will
probably pass the requirements, but it's no big consolation!

Btw, D.S.'s suggestions will not be acceptable. We would like to use
"like", "starting" and "between" with the SQL, and third party tools
as well (for doing maintenance).
